Cyprus Advances Toward Knowledge-Based Economy, Minister Announces

Nicosia: The Government's plan for building an economy centered on knowledge, innovation, and technology is progressing, according to Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Nicodemos Damianou. During a visit to The Cyprus Institute's "PROTEAS" energy technology facility, Damianou highlighted the government's strategic shift from a service-based economy to one focused on technological advancements.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Deputy Minister Damianou emphasized that the new productive model is in an advanced phase. The government is currently designing a new research and innovation strategy and finalizing a strategy for artificial intelligence, following a recently concluded public consultation. Damianou expressed confidence that Cyprus will emerge as a hub where cutting-edge technologies are tested and innovative solutions are implemented in sectors where the country holds significant expertise and interest.

Energy was identified as a pivotal sector for this transformation. Damianou pointed to "PROTEAS" as a living example of the model Cyprus aims to adopt. He stated the goal is not merely to consume technology but to attract innovative businesses to the island, enhancing Cyprus's offerings in the era of artificial intelligence.

Stavros Malas, President of The Cyprus Institute, echoed the importance of designing future energy solutions for Cyprus. He highlighted the inefficiency of current desalination plants and advocated for a transition to more sustainable models. At "PROTEAS," collaborative efforts with companies are focused on testing new technologies to produce water efficiently, addressing long-term water supply needs.

Malas further mentioned the application of energy storage technologies in agriculture to heat greenhouses with renewable energy sources and produce water for irrigation. He stressed the necessity for Cyprus to plan its energy transition towards green development as part of a broader ecosystem of integrated technologies.
