Cypriot MEP tells European Parliament plenary of need to highlight wealth of EU islands

The need to focus on the wealth of the EU islands was highlighted by Lefteris Christoforou, EPP MEP, in his speech on Monday afternoon on the islands and EU cohesion policy. The rapporteur of the report is Younous Omarjee, chairman of the Regional Development committee.

“Our islands are the real, natural wealth of the EU, which the Union has unfortunately not highlighted to date, because it has failed to create a comprehensive European policy for our islands and to create sources of development, progress and perspective there,” Christoforou said.

In addition, he noted that Cyprus could become an energy hub but also a model for renewable energy sources and host a European organisation.

“It is time for our islands to be at the heart of EU policies and to prove that our islands deserve a better treatment by the EU,” Christoforou concluded.
