Cypriot firefighters operate in Grammatiko as wildfires continue to ravage Greece

The Cypriot mission, consisting of firefighters and other first responders, was actively combating a new wildfire, Saturday, in the Grammatiko area, according to the Spokesperson for the Cyprus Fire Service, Andreas Kettis. In a post on “X” (formerly Twitter), Kettis said that Greek firefighting forces were working alongside Cypriot personnel in this operation.

Kettis also said that water pipeline installations were being set up over considerable distances to address active fire fronts located in areas inaccessible by firefighting vehicles.

This marks the second consecutive day of the Cypriot mission’s operation in Greece. On Friday, the team had been battling the fire in the Parnitha region until late hours. The operation was executed with well-coordinated teams and motorized equipment from both the Greek and Slovak Fire Services, according to Kettis.

In a previous update, the Spokesperson quoted the mission’s director, Christoforos Stylianou, who is closely coordinating the operation in collaboration with the Hellenic Fire Service. Stylianou stressed the daunting challenges in firefighting operations, pointing out adverse environmental conditions, dense forest vegetation, and the rugged landscape as significant obstacles. He reassured that all members of the mission are in good health.
