Countries Threatening EU Member States Cannot Participate in SAFE, Palmas Says

Paphos: Countries that pose a threat to EU member states are barred from participating in the SAFE (Strategic Autonomy and European Defence) program, Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas reiterated, echoing the stance of European Council President Antonio Costa. This position, he stated, “needs no further interpretation.”

According to Cyprus News Agency, the Defence Minister made these remarks in Kelokedara, Paphos, following a memorial service for the community’s fallen heroes. Palmas emphasized that a list of defence programs relevant to the Republic of Cyprus would be submitted by November 30.

When questioned about Turkey’s potential accession to SAFE, Palmas reiterated Costa’s position that countries threatening EU member states are ineligible for SAFE participation. He emphasized that this stance is unequivocal and does not require further clarification beyond Costa’s statement.

Furthermore, Palmas highlighted that the Republic of Cyprus has been approved to participate in SAFE with a funding allocation of 1.2 billion euros. He noted that Cyprus has until November 30 to submit a list of desired equipment programs, aiming to utilize the funds over a five-year period to enhance the National Guard and bolster the nation’s defensive capabilities.

It is important to note that November 30 is the deadline for countries seeking loans through SAFE, as they must submit their defence plans by then for immediate evaluation by the European Council.
