Limassol:Conservation efforts have been successfully completed at the mosque in Koilani, located in the Limassol district, and at the Church of Ayia Paraskevi in Palaiosofos, situated in the Kyrenia district, as announced by Sotos Ktoris, Co-Chair of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Ktoris shared the news on social media, highlighting the significance of the conservation work at the Koilani mosque, which is among the oldest in the Limassol district. He emphasized that preserving such cultural heritage fosters a connection between Cyprus' past and future, promoting trust among its people.
The conservation projects were funded by the European Union and carried out under the technical guidance of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Additionally, Ktoris noted the initiation of conservation work at the Church of Ayia Irene in Kyrenia and the completion of work at Ayia Paraskevi.
These initiatives are part of ongoing efforts to preserve Cyprus' cultural sites, with financial support from the European Union and guidance from the UNDP, amidst the backdrop of Cyprus' ongoing division since 1974. Despite several rounds of UN-led peace talks, a resolution remains elusive. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres plans to convene another meeting involving all parties after sufficient preparation, with Mara Angela Holgun and Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto playing key roles in facilitating future negotiations.
