Commission in contact with Cypriot authorities on possible modifications to halloumi PDO file

The European Commission is under the understanding that the Cypriot government intends to submit modifications for the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) file for halloumi/hellim, a spokesperson told CNA during the Commission’s midday briefing in Brussels on Tuesday.

Responding to a question on whether a PDO file can be changed, the Commission’s spokesperson on trade, Balazs Ujvari, said that “indeed it is possible to submit modifications to a registered geographical indication.”

“We understand that the Cypriot authorities want to submit modifications”, Ujvari added, noting that the Commission is in contact with the government and the process is following its course.
