Nicosia: Wang Aiwen, a prominent Chinese official, has reiterated China’s support for a fair and lasting resolution of the Cyprus issue, in line with United Nations Security Council resolutions. Wang, who holds significant positions within the Chinese Communist Party, met with key Cypriot parliamentary figures to discuss the matter.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Wang met with Haris Georgiades, Chair of the Parliamentary Committee of Foreign Affairs, and committee members Marina Nicolaou and Alexandra Attalides. The meeting was also attended by China’s Ambassador in Cyprus, Liu Yantao. Both sides emphasized the strong bilateral relations between Cyprus and China and recognized the potential for further cooperation and growth. The Cypriot parliamentarians expressed gratitude to China for its consistent efforts towards settling the Cyprus issue and reiterated Cyprus’s stance of “One Cyprus – One China.”
Georgiades underscored Cyprus’s position as a bastion of security and stability in the Eastern Mediterran
ean, highlighting Turkey’s disruptive role and its uncompromising stance on the Cyprus issue.
Wang acknowledged the significant impact of the Strategic Partnership between China and Cyprus, which has bolstered political and trade relations. He also noted the collaborative efforts under the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative and praised Cyprus for its constructive role in EU-China relations.
Cyprus has faced division since 1974 following Turkey’s invasion and occupation of its northern region. Despite numerous UN-led peace initiatives, a resolution remains elusive, with the last negotiations in July 2017 at Crans-Montana, Switzerland, ending without agreement.
