Candidates in 1st round of presidential elections complied with personal data rules, Commissioner says

There was compliance by the representatives of the candidates for the Presidency of the Republic in the 1st round of the Presidential Elections, according to a press release by the office of the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection, Irene Loizidou Nikolaidou.

It is noted that during the elections of February 5, compliance checks were carried out in 90 polling stations all over Cyprus.

The checks showed that procedures and or instructions that the Office of the Commissioner had set out in a Notice dated February 1, 2023, regarding the ban on calling out ID numbers during the voting process and personal data that representatives of political combinations/parties/candidates are entitled to have inside the polling stations, were observed.

It is further added that throughout the campaign period, up to the time of writing this statement, 25 complaints were submitted against candidates’ staff and/or supporters regarding the receipt of unsolicited promotional text messages and/or phone calls.

At the same time, 14 questions were submitted in relation to the processing of personal data in the context of the electoral process.

Complaints will be duly investigated and their outcome will be made public at a later date, the press release concludes.
