Cyprus Health Ministry announces four deaths due to COVID-19 and 2,812 new cases on Saturday

Cyprus Health Ministry announced on Saturday that four more COVID-19 patients have died, while 2,812 new coronavirus cases have been traced. The positivity rate stands at 3.58%.

The total number of deaths due to COVID-19 is now 899 and of COVID-19 cases 350,688.

The four people who have died are a 98 year old woman who passed away on March 11 and a 59 year old man, an 84 year old woman and an 81 year old man, who all passed away on March 12.

A total of 110 COVID-19 patients are treated in hospitals, 17 of them in a critical condition, of whom 5 are intubated.

A percentage of 53.64% of the patients who are in hospital have not been vaccinated.

Moreover, 22 patients who have ceased to be contagious continue to be treated in an Intensive Treatment Unit, due to COVID-19, and are intubated.

UNFICYP personnel from Ukraine to be repatriated and be replaced as soon as possible, Siddique tells CNA

Five members of the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) will be repatriated and will soon be replaced, according to the force`s spokesperson, Aleem Siddique.

Spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric, has told the international press briefing at the UN headquarters that Ukraine has requested to withdraw remaining uniformed personnel serving with five other peacekeeping operations — Mali, Cyprus, Abyei, South Sudan and Kosovo, and that this includes 250 troops, 36 staff officers and experts on mission and 22 police officers, a total of 308 personnel from Ukraine.

There are five individuals from Ukraine who are members of UNFICYP and as the force`s spokesperson told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), responding to a question, arrangements are being made for them to be repatriated, that is to return to Ukraine.

A quarter of the Cyprus Police workforce are women

Cyprus ranks in the first places among European countries with the highest number of females in the police force, as 25% of the workforce are women, Assistant Head of Crime Combat Unit and member of the Police Gender equality committee, Kyriaki Lambrianidou, said on Friday.

Lambrianidou unveiled figures from Eurostat during an event, in Nicosia, to mark international women`s day. She said that statistics show that in Europe 18% of the workforce in the police are women and this stands at 25% in Cyprus.

Funding of €150 mln for programmes by Research & Innovation Foundation

Cyprus’ Research and Innovation Foundation offers funding of 150 mln euro via various programmes that will be announced by 2027 and the main goal is to produce knowledge that is the lever for growth and innovation, said Dr. Nikos Mastroyiannopoulos, Head of the Foundation and Chief Scientist.

Mastroyiannopoulos presented the main pillars of the programmes, the challenges ahead and what the foundation has achieved the previous year amid a difficult year because of the pandemic, during a press conference and the Presidential Palace on Friday.

Citizens are invited to express their views of Old Nicosia

Citizens are invited to take part in an online survey about their views of the future of the Historic Centre of Nicosia. The survey is part of the participation of the Municipality of Nicosia and the Cyprus Energy Agency in the HUB-IN project [Hubs of Innovation and Entrepreneurship for the Transformation of Historic Urban Areas], funded by the Horizon 2020 European Programme.

According to a press release by the Municipality of Nicosia, HUB-IN aims to promote Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the Historic Centers of 8 European cities (Angouleme, Genoa, Nicosia, Lisbon, Belfast, Brasov, Utrecht and Slovenia Bistrica). The project aspires to transform and regenerate the historic urban areas of cities, while preserving their unique, cultural and social identity and the environment.

In this context, residents, employees and visitors of the city within the walls are invited to share their opinion about the Historic Centre of Nicosia. The answers that will be collected will be used in the creation of a Roadmap, which will include actions for the revitalisation of the area and its promotion as a centre of entrepreneurship and innovation, the press release concludes.

Meteorology Department issues yellow warning for extreme low temperature

Cyprus` Department of Meteorology issued a yellow warning on Friday for extreme low temperature. It is valid from 21.00 on Friday to 08.00 on Saturday morning.

It is noted that the minimum temperature over Troodos higher peaks is expected to fall to around minus 8 degrees Celsius.

ECDC epidemiological map shows improvement of COVID-19 spread in eastern Europe and Spain

The latest epidemiological map on the spread of COVID-19 issued by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) on Thursday has shown an improvement in the situation in eastern Europe as well as in Spain.

However, most regions and countries in the EU and the European Economic Area (EEA), including Cyprus, remain in the “deep red” category, the highest available category for recording the spread of COVID-19.

The province of Subcarpathia in Poland has this week become the first region in continental Europe to pass into the “orange” category after several weeks.

EU notes Turkey’s condemnation of the Russian invasion as well as its mediation efforts, Borrell spokesperson tells CNA

The European Commission has noted Ankara’s efforts to mediate between Russia and Ukraine, as well as Turkey’s condemnation of the invasion, while also encouraging the country to cooperate in the context of the EU’s response, Commission spokesperson Peter Stano told the Cyprus News Agency responding to a question on Turkey’s degree of alignment with EU sanctions on Russia, given that it is still a candidate country.

“Overall, Turkey has spoken out strongly, condemning the Russian aggression and supporting the territorial integrity of Ukraine and has also cosponsored the UNGA resolution” Stano noted. “These are important steps, which we welcome” he added.
