ATF Team Pinpoints Origin and Cause of Limassol Fire, Official Report Imminent

Limassol: The exact point of origin of the fire in the mountainous area of Limassol and its causes have been identified by a team of experts from the United States specializing in fire investigation, who are expected to deliver their official report within the next two weeks, according to Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis. Speaking after President Christodoulides’ meeting with the ATF team at the Presidential Palace on Monday, Letymbiotis said that the report would form the basis of the Government’s assessment for the next steps to be taken.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the ATF experts, a specialized team in fire investigation that reports directly to the US Department of Justice, have carried out similar missions in 44 countries, offering their technical knowledge and expertise. They gave a detailed presentation to the President of the Republic on the methodology they have followed, including a timetable with information obtained from all the services involved, personal interviews conducted, and additional information requested during their stay in Cyprus. They utilized technology through available information, simulations, and daily site visits.

“What emerges from today’s presentation is that they have identified the exact point of origin of the fire and its causes, and within the next two weeks they are expected to prepare and deliver to the President of the Republic their official detailed report, which will form the basis of the Government’s assessment for the next steps,” said the Spokesperson.

When questioned about the number of origins, Letymbiotis confirmed that the investigation revealed a single point of origin. As for the causes, the Spokesperson advised waiting for the final report.

Regarding whether the experts identified any shortcomings in Cyprus, Letymbiotis stated that such evaluations would occur in the next stage. Based on the findings, a thorough assessment of the events will be made, considering the circumstances and challenges posed by climatic conditions, which the European Union and the Republic of Cyprus must address.

In response to whether another team would be sent for management assessment, Letymbiotis emphasized waiting for the official report. He noted that the findings will provide a solid basis for evaluating the next steps, and announcements will follow after studying the report.

When asked if the report would be made public, Letymbiotis confirmed the President’s intention to do so, ensuring it does not contain personal data. Concerning compensation for fire damages, the Government has initiated contact with the EU, with Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, coordinating the relevant ministries to gather necessary information efficiently.

Raouna has been in contact with the Office of the President of the European Commission to ensure compliance with the EU timetable for submitting the request.
