Limassol: Fire brigade chief Nicos Logginos has reported a concerning number of arson attempts across Cyprus, even in the aftermath of the devastating fire in the Limassol district. “There are crooks out there who are trying, even after this fire, to commit malicious acts,” Logginos stated on Saturday morning.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Logginos provided assurances that there is currently no active fire front in Limassol, only small flare-ups that are being swiftly addressed. He emphasized the importance of extinguishing these flare-ups immediately to prevent them from escalating into larger fires. Citizens are urged to avoid any actions that could potentially spark new fires.
Logginos detailed the ongoing efforts to monitor and contain the situation, with firefighting forces stationed around the fire’s perimeter and aerial units providing surveillance from above. Despite the challenging conditions, these forces remain robust and vigilant. The affected area spans approximately 120 square kilometers, necessitating meticulous attention given the prevailing weather conditions, including winds of 3 to 4 Beaufort.
The fire brigade chief noted the challenges posed by the high temperatures and humidity, particularly in coastal areas, which initially hindered aerial operations. Fortunately, as conditions improved, aircraft were deployed to monitor the region effectively.
Inquiries about the proximity of small outbreaks to specific communities revealed that certain perimeter areas, like industrial zones and Omodos village, remain at risk. Logginos reiterated that current conditions are under control, with all flare-ups being swiftly extinguished.
Regarding the investigation into the fire’s origins, Logginos confirmed that all pertinent information has been relayed to the police, who are handling the case. He stressed the importance of public vigilance during this critical period, advising citizens to cease activities involving electrical tools and to report suspicious activities promptly.
Logginos highlighted a specific incident in the Orounda village area on Friday, where a suspicious vehicle was linked to new fires. Thanks to rapid response efforts by the Department of Forests and fire services, these fires were quickly contained.
