Archaeological Team from Italy and Cyprus Concludes 2025 Fieldwork at Erimi Settlement

Erimi: A team of archaeologists, specialists, and students from Italy and Cyprus has completed the 2025 fieldwork season after investigating the Middle Bronze Age settlement and funerary areas at Erimi-Laonin tou Porakou between 28 July and 22 August 2025.

According to Cyprus News Agency, an announcement by the Department of Antiquities of the Deputy Ministry of Culture notes that the team was under the scientific direction of Prof. Luca Bombardieri, with research primarily supported by the University of Siena. This endeavor is a steady collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Antiquities.

The excavations in the settlement focused on three areas at the top of the hill and a sector of the southern funerary cluster. The overall plan of an extended central building was exposed on the hilltop, constructed with massive perimeter walls, covering an area of approximately 220 m². A significant assemblage of pithoi and ceramic containers was recovered from a large storage are
a, while further ceramic vessels were found along the perimeter walls of the open court.

Moreover, a domestic unit in the northernmost sector of the hilltop was fully excavated, forming part of an extended residential quarter previously exposed during the 2023-2024 seasons. A section of the circuit wall was also identified in the same area.

Additionally, excavations in the extramural southern cemetery revealed a complex multiple burial program and associated funerary deposits, consistent with the later occupational phase of the community during the final stages of the Middle Bronze Age.
