Agriculture Minister to Emphasize Farm Resilience at EU Council

Luxembourg: Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment, Maria Panayiotou, is set to represent her country at the EU Council of Agriculture and Fisheries Ministers in Luxembourg on October 27-28. The meeting aims to address key issues affecting agricultural policies within the EU, with a particular focus on climate resilience in farming.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the Ministry issued a press release on Sunday stating that Minister Panayiotou will stress the need for simplifying and restructuring farms to withstand the climate crisis, emphasizing the significance of these measures in achieving a successful green transition. This discussion will take place within the broader context of the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and the European Commission’s proposals for CAP post-2027. Member states are expected to deliberate on the proposed green transition approach, aiming to establish a level playing field in competitive financial support for farmers across the region.

The press release also highlighted Minister Panayiotou’s focus on increasing the budget allocations for agriculture to meet climate and environmental objectives. Additionally, EU Ministers will discuss the current market situation, particularly considering the impact of the ongoing war in Ukraine, with insights from Taras Kachka, Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration.

In the realm of fisheries, the EU Ministers will seek a political agreement concerning fishing opportunities in the Baltic Sea for 2026 and will assess the status of large pelagic species in the Atlantic and Mediterranean Seas. These discussions will precede the annual meeting of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas.
