Agriculture Minister Meets WOAH Director General to Discuss Animal Health Challenges

Nicosia: Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panayiotou, met with the President and Director General of the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), Emmanuelle Soubeyran, during the WOAH Middle East Regional Commission Conference hosted in Cyprus by the Veterinary Services. The meeting addressed global animal-health challenges and Cyprus’ increased involvement in the Organisation’s governance.

According to Cyprus News Agency, discussions emphasized the importance of early reporting of animal diseases, harmonized scientific standards, and constant vigilance against emerging health threats. Both parties highlighted the direct connection between animal health, food security, and public health, especially in the context of climate change and in anticipation of Cyprus’ upcoming EU Council Presidency.

WOAH’s President emphasized the necessity of strengthening veterinary services globally, referencing shortages in specialized personnel, laboratory capacity, and technical support. The Minister noted that Cyprus is ready to contribute to technological upgrades, training, and capacity-building initiatives, utilizing its expertise and island features.

The meeting also focused on Cyprus’ institutional role within WOAH, with Christodoulos Phippis, Director of Veterinary Services, serving as Vice-President of the Organisation’s Governance Review Committee. This position allows Cyprus to actively influence reforms and future strategic directions.

Wildlife, fisheries, and the One Health approach were also discussed, with agreement on the need for closer collaboration between WOAH, WHO, and FAO. WOAH’s President extended an invitation to the Minister for the Organisation’s next session in Paris in spring 2026, where the new strategic priorities for the coming years will be announced.
