Saudi Ambassador Highlights Cyprus’ Potential as Regional Hub Amid Middle East Tensions

Nicosia: The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) is regarded as a significant modern connectivity initiative, according to the Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to Cyprus, Fawaz bin Abdulrahman Alshubaili. He emphasizes Cyprus’ strategic geographical position as a potential link between the Middle East and Europe, suggesting it could evolve into a regional hub. However, he also highlights the challenges posed by regional tension and conflict, which could impact the protection of essential infrastructure.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Ambassador Alshubaili, in an interview, described Trump’s plan for Gaza as an important step toward a comprehensive and equitable solution. He also pointed out that Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides’ six-point proposal could significantly aid the implementation of the next phase of the Agreement reached at the Summit in Sharm El Sheikh.

The Ambassador expressed hope that the October agreement would prompt immediate actions to alleviate Palestinian suffering in the Gaza Strip, alongside efforts for a complete Israeli withdrawal and steps towards a just peace based on the two-state solution. This includes establishing an independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in line with UN resolutions, the Arab Peace Initiative, and the New York Declaration.

Furthermore, the Saudi Ambassador reiterated Saudi Arabia’s clear stance on relations with Israel, emphasizing that normalization cannot occur before a Palestinian state is established. He affirmed that the realization of a Palestinian state and the two-state solution would foster regional integration, security, stability, and shared prosperity.

Discussing cooperation efforts, Ambassador Alshubaili highlighted the significance of the general agreement signed between Saudi Arabia and Cyprus, reflecting the leadership’s commitment to enhancing bilateral ties. He mentioned the importance of encouraging knowledge exchange and technical expertise through mutual visits and participation in scientific events to strengthen people-to-people connections.

He also noted that boosting trade and investment, exemplified by the signing of an MoU between Saudi Exim Bank and Bank of Cyprus, would open new collaboration avenues. Tourism, another vital sector, is expected to enhance people-to-people connections through implementing the Memorandum of Understanding signed in Riyadh.

On the IMEC’s prospects, Ambassador Alshubaili acknowledged the economic assets and strategic locations of both countries. He emphasized the importance of leveraging these to increase trade and investment through national companies. However, he noted the ongoing regional tension and conflict, questioning the security of the necessary infrastructure.

Regarding the Cyprus settlement, the Ambassador expressed hope for a prompt resumption of negotiations, underscoring Saudi Arabia’s commitment to peaceful dispute resolution in line with international law and UN resolutions. He wished for a sustainable solution to ensure stability and prosperity for Cyprus’ people.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, following Turkey’s invasion and occupation of its northern third. Despite numerous UN-led peace talks, a resolution remains elusive, with the last negotiations in 2017 at Crans-Montana ending inconclusively.
