Agios Georgios Church in Karavas Among Ongoing Restoration Projects Aiming to Promote Reconciliation

Karavas: Bicommunal crews have commenced restoration work on the church of Agios Georgios, situated in the Mezere area of the Turkish-occupied town of Karavas. This initiative is part of a larger project that also includes restoration efforts at the church of Agia Irene.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the Co-Chair of the bicommunal Technical Committee, Sotos Ktoris, recently shared details of the project, which is funded by the community and the European Union with technical guidance from the UNDP. Ktoris emphasized the significance of cultural heritage care as a means of fostering understanding and reconciliation between communities.

Restoration is also underway at the church of Panagia Faneromeni in Gastria, located in the Karpas peninsula. Meanwhile, Ktoris noted that rescue operations at the church of Panagia Melissa on the northern slopes of the Pentadaktylos mountain range have been completed, successfully preserving the monument.

Ktoris highlighted the collaborative spirit of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot conservators, architects, engineers, and builders, who worked diligently and with commitment to safeguard the church. This project, too, received financial support from the European Union and technical assistance from the UNDP.
