Accra:Fifty-six countries, including Cyprus, have issued a joint statement reaffirming their commitment to implementing United Nations Security Council resolutions that were reinstated following the completion of the 'snapback' process.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the joint statement, released on October 2, 2026, was backed by countries such as the United States, Greece, and the United Kingdom, among others. It highlights the resolutions' reinstatement on September 27, 2025, due to Iran's failure to comply with its nuclear commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). This process was initiated by France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
The statement emphasizes the commitment of the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI)-endorsing states to continue implementing all obligations under the reinstated UNSCRs. These obligations include preventing the supply of items and technology that could contribute to Iran's nuclear activities and upholding arms restrictions.
Additionally, the countries commit to ensuring adequate domestic legal authority to tackle Iran's proliferation activities and pledge to take effective measures against the sale or transfer of materials that could aid in the development of weapons of mass destruction. They also intend to streamline procedures for the rapid exchange of information concerning Iran's proliferation activities and review their national legal frameworks to ensure effectiveness.
The participating nations welcome efforts at the national level to fulfill their UNSCR obligations and support initiatives like Operation Economic Outcast to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. They also call on all UN Member States to enforce these resolutions and express ongoing concerns about Iran's nuclear program.
Furthermore, the statement urges Iran to comply with its nonproliferation obligations, cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and address the international community's concerns about its nuclear activities.
