NBA All-Star Ja Morant suspended 25 games

The NBA suspended Memphis Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant for 25 games without pay Friday for brandishing a firearm on social media.

“Morant’s suspension begins immediately and will remain in effect through the first 25 games of the 2023-24 regular season,” the NBA said in a statement about the penalty for conduct detrimental to the league.

The 23-year-old all-star will also be barred from public league and team activities, including preseason games, throughout his suspension, said the statement said, adding that he will need to meet certain conditions before he can return to the court.

It is the second time Morant was suspended in the last three months after an eight-game suspension in March.

Morant appeared on a friend’s Instagram feed holding what appeared to be a gun last month, prompting the latest investigation by the NBA.

He had already been suspended by the Grizzlies from team activities, in anticipation of the NBA sanction.

The point guard released a statement following his recent suspension, apologizing for his actions on social media.

“I want to apologize to the NBA, the Grizzlies, my teammates and the city of Memphis. To (NBA Commissioner) Adam Silver, (Grizzlies General Manager) Zach Kleiman and (Grizzlies owner) Robert Pera – who gave me the opportunity to be a professional athlete and have supported me – I’m sorry for the harm I’ve done.”

Morant was named to the All-Star team twice in 2022 and 2023, averaging 26.2 points, 5.9 rebounds and 8.1 assists in 61 games this season.

Clashes renew in conflict-ravaged Sudan

Clashes resumed on Saturday between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group in the capital Khartoum, according to witnesses.

Sounds of artillery shelling and fighting with heavy weapons were reported in south Khartoum and in Bahri, northeast of the capital, witnesses said.

‘Military aircraft targeted RSF forces north and south of Khartoum,’ an eyewitness told Anadolu.

Violent clashes were also reported in the town of Tawila in North Darfur state.

There were no reports yet of casualties.

Sudan has been ravaged by clashes between the army and the RSF since mid-April. Nearly 1,000 civilians have been killed and thousands injured in the violence, according to local medics.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates that more than 2.2 million people have been displaced by the current conflict in Sudan.

Retired coast guard admiral blames Greek authorities for migrant boat disaster

A retired Greek admiral blamed the country’s coast guard Friday for a deadly incident in which a migrant boat sank in the Mediterranean Sea, with hundreds still missing.

Speaking to the Greek Radio and Television Corporation ERT, Nikos Spanos said that before it sank, Greek authorities asked the overloaded vessel if it needed help despite receiving a distress signal.

“The Greek Coast Guard teams had to intervene anyway,” Spanos said, criticizing authorities’ claim that the boat did not request help and rejected offers for assistance.

“The boat was a floating cemetery, a very old boat with no documentation,” he said. “We do not ask the people on the boat, which is in danger of sinking, if they need help,” said Spanos.

He claimed search and rescue ships that were close to the area where the incident occurred did not immediately take action.

The migrant boat sank off southwestern Greece early Wednesday. While more than 100 passengers were rescued, nearly 500 are missing in the surrounding Mediterranean waters and 78 bodies have been recovered, according to UN officials.

Swedish foreign minister condemns PKK terror group

Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom said Friday that his country ‘condemns all terror organizations, including the PKK.’

Billstrom, speaking alongside French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna at a news conference in Paris, said Sweden has fulfilled the last part of its commitment under a June 2022 trilateral memorandum signed in Madrid to address Ankara’s security concerns on terrorism with a new anti-terror law, which has been effective since June 1.

He noted Stockholm’s goal is the same as Ankara’s: To fight terrorism.

Answering a question by Anadolu about where his government is in its fight against the PKK, he reiterated that Stockholm has fulfilled its commitments and that cooperation between Swedish and Turkish police has improved significantly.

“Sweden’s stance on the PKK is very clear. That’s why we wanted to fulfill everything written and decided in the memorandum to become a NATO member,” he said.

Finland and Sweden applied for NATO membership soon after Russia launched a war on Ukraine in February 2022.

Although Trkiye approved Finland’s membership, it is waiting for Sweden to fulfill commitments under the deal.

Several foreign ministers hope Trkiye would approve Sweden’s bid ahead of a NATO summit next month.

But Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan made it clear that if Trkiye is expected to respond to Stockholm’s expectations of accession to NATO, Sweden must also do its part on the PKK terror group ahead of the summit.

North Korea’s ruling party discusses diplomatic, defense strategies

The North Korean ruling party’s key meeting began to discuss the country’s economic, diplomatic, and defense strategies, state-run media reported on Saturday.

The 8th Enlarged Plenary Meeting of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea that began on Friday was attended by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, Korean Central News Agency reported.

The agency didn’t share details, agenda and for how many days it will continue, but said the agenda items were unanimously approved at the plenary meeting.

It will also discuss the issues relating to the state’s diplomatic and defense strategy to cope with the changed international situation, it said.

Tensions grew in the region last year following North Korea’s multiple missile launches and the US-South Korea joint military drills.

On Thursday, Pyongyang fired two short-range ballistic missiles following the launch of a military spy satellite that crashed into the Yellow Sea on May 31.
