Stano tells CNA that alignment of countries in the accession process with sanctions on Russia is continually assessed

The Commission is in continuous communication with countries that candidates for accession into the European Union when it comes to the degree of their alignment with sanctions against Russia, foreign affairs spokesperson Peter Stano told CNA, responding to a question on Serbia’s and Turkey’s alignment with the measures, during Friday’s midday briefing in Brussels.

Stano noted that the alignment of candidate countries with EU policies overall and with foreign policy in particular are continuously assessed as part of this process, and pointed out that each country knows where it stands and what is expected of it at any given time.

The spokesperson also noted that some of the candidate countries, such as most countries in the Western Balkans, have aligned fully with the EU’s sanctions, while some only do so in part, naming Serbia, without naming Turkey itsel

Foreign Minister to attend EU Foreign Affairs and General Affairs Councils in Luxembourg

Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides departs on Sunday for Luxembourg, where he will participate in the EU Foreign Affairs Council that will take place on Monday, 11 April 2022.

According to a Ministry`s press release, developments in Ukraine, the Global Gateway and other current regional and international issues are expected to be the focus of the Foreign Ministers` discussions. During an informal working lunch, the Foreign Ministers will exchange views on developments in Ukraine and the EU`s coordinated response, in the presence of their counterparts from Norway and Iceland.

Cyprus records 3 deaths due to COVID-19 and 2,028 new cases, hospitalisations at 202

Cypriot health authorities on Friday reported three deaths due to COVID-19 and 2,028 new cases, while 202 patients are treated in public hospitals.The total tally of deaths and infections since the outbreak of the pandemic is now 974 and 454,200 respectively.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Health, a total of 80,771 tests were carried, with the overall daily positivity rate at 2.

Municipality of Paphos and American University of Beirut sign agreement for establishment of a new campus in Cyprus

The Municipality of Paphos and the American University of Beirut (AUB) signed Friday an Agreement for the establishment of an AUB campus in Paphos, in the presence of the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades and the US Assistant Secretary of State of State Lee Satterfield.

“The United States is proud of the bilateral relationship with the Republic of Cyprus, a valued partner and a center of stability, democracy and prosperity in the eastern Mediterranean and beyond”, said in her speech at the ceremony US Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Lee Satterfield.

Satterfield echoed Under Secretary of State Victoria Nuland and thanked the Republic of Cyprus and the Cypriot people for all they are doing to support Ukraine “against an unwarranted, unprovoked, and unjust war by Vladimir Putin.

High concentrations of dust in the air Friday

High concentrations of dust are observed in the air Friday, according to measurements from ground Stations of the Air Quality Monitoring Network operated by the Department of Labour Inspection.

The public and particularly any vulnerable groups of population (children, older people and the infirm) are urged to avoid circulating in open spaces until the observed episode has elapsed, as the small size of respirable particles in dust may have negative effects on human health.

Employers must take appropriate organizational and/or technical measures after assessing any risks that their employees may face while working in open spaces, and it is recommended that workers in such spaces use appropriate means of personal protection.

So far 86 people vaccinated with Novavax, Health Ministry official tells CNA

A total of 86 people have been vaccinated with the new Novavax protein vaccine, which is marketed under the name Nuvaxovid, Acting Director of the Ministry of Health Nursing Services, Evagoras Tampouris, told CNA, noting that another 26 people have scheduled an appointment for vaccination in the coming period.

According to Tampouris, 60 citizens have received the first dose with Nuvaxovid, while 26 have received the second dose. He noted that the first vaccinations were administered on March 12, with 14 vaccinations in total for that day.

Health Ministry announces an updated number of deaths due to COVID

Health Ministry on Friday announced an updated number of deaths due to COVID-19. The deceased reached 971 and not 952 as it was said yesterday in the cases announced. The Ministry clarified that the new number is due to revised figures in the database and following a double check with numbers of the Epidemiological Surveillance Unit.

The deceased (19) are 7 male and 12 female between the ages of 53 and 97 who passed away in the period between May 2021 and February 2022.

The Ministry says that the update of figures takes place frequently in an attempt to provide accurate information to the public, on the basis of transparency.
