The Commission is in continuous communication with countries that candidates for accession into the European Union when it comes to the degree of their alignment with sanctions against Russia, foreign affairs spokesperson Peter Stano told CNA, responding to a question on Serbia’s and Turkey’s alignment with the measures, during Friday’s midday briefing in Brussels.
Stano noted that the alignment of candidate countries with EU policies overall and with foreign policy in particular are continuously assessed as part of this process, and pointed out that each country knows where it stands and what is expected of it at any given time.
The spokesperson also noted that some of the candidate countries, such as most countries in the Western Balkans, have aligned fully with the EU’s sanctions, while some only do so in part, naming Serbia, without naming Turkey itsel
