There is zero tolerance for phenomena of corruption and manipulation of sports competitions, President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, said on Monday, addressing the inauguration ceremony of the National School of Ethics of the Committee of Ethics and Sport Safeguarding, at the Presidential Palace.

He congratulated the Committee not only on the establishment of the National School of Ethics, but also on the important work that it has been carrying out which as he said is recognised by the Cypriot society. The President also referred to a meeting he had held earlier in the day at the Presidential Palace, with the participation of the Minister of Justice and the Chief of Police where they also discussed corruption in sports.

President Christodoulides said that he asked to speed up the probes on the cases, which are under investigation, and stressed that our only goal and pursuit, is to have ‘clean sporting events’, in a safe, welcoming and pleasant environment both inside and outside the st
adiums, with spectators, participants and local communities away from any phenomena of violence that are also related to corruption.

He pledged that the government, through initiatives for the promotion and implementation of specific measures, seeks to effectively address such phenomena in sports venues and thus create a sports environment that will offer athletes, and the society in general, the conditions for a comprehensive education, social well-being and, above all, success in sports.

In order to achieve this goal, everyone should assume their responsibilities, he concluded.
