Limassol: Sixteen villages in the mountainous and semi-mountainous areas of Limassol are currently without electricity due to damage caused by wildfires. Christina Papadopoulou, spokesperson for the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC), described the situation as “extremely difficult” in a statement to CNA.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the affected villages include Agios Amvrosios, Agios Therapon, Alassa, Arsos, Kissousa, Kato Kivides, Kolossi, Malia, Pachna, Potamiou, Silikou, Sotira, Souni, Vasa Koilaniou, Vouni, and Zanakia. In response, an operations centre was established on Wednesday, bringing in staff and materials from other cities. These teams are equipped with platforms and tools to assist EAC workers in Limassol as they strive to restore power.
“The situation is extremely difficult,” Papadopoulou explained. “Teams are attempting visual inspections wherever it is safe to do so. At present, we don’t have a clear picture of the damage, as only about 15% of the fire-affected area has been assessed. We need the fire to be fully extinguished before a complete assessment can be made.”
Papadopoulou emphasized the importance of safety, urging citizens to avoid approaching or touching any exposed wires or poles. She reassured local residents that EAC personnel are available to provide information, updates, and assistance, but warned against interacting with damaged wires or equipment.
When asked about the timeline for restoring electricity, Papadopoulou indicated that it is currently impossible to provide an estimate. Crews are unable to approach certain areas due to the ongoing fire and challenging terrain. “As a first step, we will try to find alternative ways to supply electricity wherever it is safe to do so. We will be there, working continuously, but if the fire is not completely extinguished, it is impossible to restore power,” she concluded.
