The Government will wait for Chevron’s response before making any public statements, Cyprus’ President, Nikos Christodoulides, said on Sunday. Asked by a journalist about the issue, upon his arrival at an inauguration ceremony in the village of Korakou, President Christodoulides said that the Republic of Cyprus would respond to Chevron, ‘and until we receive an answer to our own position, I do not consider it right to publicly express my position.’ ‘We will respond in writing, we will wait for the company’s response and then we will speak publicly’, he said, noting that this was not the time for public statements, especially for this specific issue. Earlier on Sunday, Energy Minister, George Papanastasiou, told CNA that the Republic of Cyprus would respond in writing, within the day, to a letter by Chervon, received a few days ago, in which the company requests extension of negotiations as regards the modification of the “Aphrodite” offshore gas field development and production plan.
