We are doing everything in our power for a Cyprus solution, Kombos says

We seek to find a solution to the Cyprus problem, far from any idea of partition or acceptance of faits accomplis, Cyprus’ Foreign Minister, Constantinos Kombos, said on Saturday at an event organised by the occupied Municipality of Lysi in Larnaca. We are doing everything in our power for the creation of the right conditions for a solution, he said.

In his greeting, the Minister referred to the 50th anniversary since the Turkish invasion, noting ‘for all of us, the invasion and occupation is not a historical event, it is our daily life’.

‘Using diplomacy, our only weapon against Turkish intransigence which systematically moves toward the creation of faits accomplis on our island, we promote international legitimacy and highlight our national problem in every way and opportunity. A problem that requires a solution’, Kombos said.

He assured on behalf of the President of the Republic and the Government that ‘we are doing everything in our power to create the appropriate conditions for solving our national i
ssue’.

Kombos also expressed the Government’s readiness for the immediate resumption of negotiations ‘always and exclusively on the basis of the agreed framework of the UN Security Council’.

‘We are not going to accept anything outside of this framework’, he said, adding that they were working on a solution that would allow the return of people to their ‘places of birth’.

In his own greeting, the Mayor of Lysi, Andreas Kaouris, said, among other things, that they were looking forward to that ‘blessed hour of return’. ‘It is our right, it is our responsibility, and it is our duty and obligation to continue the struggle under any circumstances until a solution to the Cypriot issue is reached which ensures the human rights of all Cypriots, ensures peace, security, love and coexistence’, he added.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at t
he Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
