US stocks start week on soft note, ending lower

Major US stock exchanges closed lower Monday to start the new week on a soft note.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell almost 200 points, or 0.59%, to finish at 33,562. The S and P 500 lost eight points, or 0.2%, to 4,273.

The Nasdaq declined 11 points, or 0.09%, to end the session at 13,229.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, rose 0.9% to 14.73. The 10-year US Treasury yield, meanwhile, shed 0.14% to 3.690%.

The dollar index was flat at 104.03, while the euro was almost unchanged at $1.0713 against the greenback.

Precious metals were mixed, with gold rising 0.7% to $1,962 per ounce but silver trimming 0.2% to $23.57.

Oil prices increased around 0.3%, with global benchmark Brent crude at $76.44 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude at $71.88.
