US stocks open higher to kick off new week


ISTANBUL: US stock opened Monday with gains to kick off the new week on a higher note.

The Dow Jones was up 81 points, or 0.21%, to 38,795 at 9.57 a.m. EDT. The S and P 500 rose 42 points, or 0.84%, to 5,160.

The Nasdaq, meanwhile, increased 210 points, or 1.3%, to 16,183 at the time.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, rose 1% to 14.56. The 10-year US Treasury yield added 0.3% to 4.319%.

The dollar index increased 0.04% to 103.48, while the euro was flat at $1.0888 against the greenback.

Precious metals were mixed, with gold adding 0.05% to $2,157 per ounce but silver decreasing 0.05% to $22.17.

Oil prices gained around 0.8% with global benchmark Brent crude at $85.97 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude at $81.28.

Despite losses in recent days, Bitcoin was up 0.5% to $67,390 but Ethereum fell 0.9% to $3,539.

The total value of the cryptocurrency market was up 0.4% to $2.55 trillion, according to data from CoinMarketCap, a digital asset price-tracking website.
