US stock market opens Monday higher


ISTANBUL: Major stock exchanges in the US opened Monday with gains.

The Dow Jones rose 39 points, or 0.1%, to 38,149 at 9.35 a.m. EDT (1435GMT). The blue-chip index on Friday recorded a new all-time closing high of 38,109 points.

The S and P 500 added four points, or 0.09%, to 4,895. The tech-heavy Nasdaq, meanwhile, increased 12 points, or 0.08%, to 15,468. Both exchanges closed lower Friday to end their six-day winning streak.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, jumped 4.6% to 13.87. The 10-year US Treasury yield shed 1.26% to 4.092%.

The dollar index increased 0.28% to 103.72, while the euro lost 0.4% to $1.0809 against the greenback.

Precious metals were on the rise, with gold adding 0.4% to $2,027 per ounce and silver increasing 0.14% to $22.83.

Oil prices were in negative territory, with global benchmark Brent crude losing 1.3% to $81.86 per barrel, and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude decreasing 1.5% to $76.80 a barrel.
