US Ambassador Highlights Strong Cyprus-US Defense Cooperation

Limassol:US Ambassador John Breslow expressed optimism about the future of defense and military cooperation between Cyprus and the United States during an interview with the Cyprus News Agency. The interview was conducted aboard the USS Roosevelt, which visited the port of Limassol. This visit coincided with US Navy and Marine participation for the first time in the annual Independence Day parade.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Ambassador Breslow discussed the progress of the 2024-2029 roadmap for bilateral defense cooperation, stating that the plan is unfolding successfully. He emphasized the importance of extending the roadmap beyond the end of President Trump's term, as Trump appointed him to his current position.

Breslow mentioned plans for enhancing facilities at Paphos Airport and highlighted the US and Cyprus Cyclops program. This initiative, funded by the US, focuses on training in areas such as cybersecurity and border security, with sessions conducted predominantly by the New Jersey National Guard. He described the program as highly beneficial and innovative.

Regarding the potential renewal of the roadmap, Ambassador Breslow noted that it is premature to discuss renewal but acknowledged its significance in strengthening ties between Cyprus and the United States. He also commented on the presence of the USS Roosevelt in Limassol, indicating that similar naval visits and joint exercises are planned to bolster regional naval security.

When questioned about Cyprus joining NATO or the Partnership for Peace program, Breslow stated that any decision should originate from the people of Cyprus. He assured that the US would support Cyprus's defense capabilities, akin to NATO support, though future developments remain unpredictable.

Addressing the possibility of a permanent lifting of the arms embargo on Cyprus, Breslow mentioned discussions in the US Senate about extending the duration of ITAR, with Senator Cory Booker showing particular interest. However, he clarified that the decision lies with Congress and the President.

Ambassador Breslow, who recently began his term in Cyprus, expressed his admiration for the island and its people. He shared personal sentiments about his and his wife's fondness for Cyprus, indicating a desire to live there post-tenure. He conveyed enthusiasm for his role and the warm reception he has received from locals.
