University of Cyprus Hosts Event on Building a Deep Tech Ecosystem

Nicosia:Opening New Pathways from Research to Innovation: #7 DeepTech CY Meetup at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Cyprus

The Faculty of Engineering of the University of Cyprus successfully hosted the #7 Deep Tech CY Meetup: Building a Deep Tech Ecosystem in Cyprus on Wednesday, 23 September 2026, at the Faculty's outdoor amphitheatre. The event brought together researchers, academics, entrepreneurs, investors, industry representatives, policymakers, and members of Cyprus' innovation ecosystem, creating a unique platform for dialogue on the future of deep technology and research commercialization in Cyprus.

Professor Marina Neophytou, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Cyprus, opened an event focused on the intersection of research, entrepreneurship, and industry. She emphasized the importance of innovation and deep technologies emerging from the collaboration of diverse knowledge and expertise. The Faculty is committed to fostering interdisciplinary research and strengthening ties with industry and society, aiming to translate promising research into technologies and entrepreneurial ventures that enhance Cyprus' innovation ecosystem.

According to Cyprus News Agency, a notable segment of the event was a fireside chat titled "Building a Deep Tech Ecosystem in Cyprus," moderated by Yiannis Eftychiou, Co-Founder and Partner at 33 East. The discussion addressed the opportunities and challenges in converting advanced research into impactful innovations and companies, while highlighting the roles of universities, industry, investors, and policymakers in bolstering the Cypriot deep-tech landscape.

The panel featured insights from a range of experts, including Margarita Chli, Assistant Professor of Robotic Vision at the University of Cyprus and Visiting Professor at ETH Zurich; Charis Christofi, Co-Founder and CEO of Orom AI; Maria Markidou Georgiadou, Director of Cyprus Seeds; Anastasia Constantinou, Head of the Innovation Management Sector at the University of Cyprus; and Anixi Antonakoudi, Director of Innovation at The Cyprus Institute. The event was supported by 33 East, Plug and Play, the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Cyprus, Cyprus Seeds, and powered by Cyprus_iT and rpv.global venture fund.
