New York:UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is committed to working towards the resumption of talks on the Cyprus issue until the last day of his term, according to President of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides. Speaking at a diaspora event in New York, President Christodoulides highlighted new ideas he presented to Guterres concerning the substance, methodology, and confidence-building measures that could facilitate negotiations. However, he noted that the Turkish side reacted negatively. According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides mentioned that the five permanent members of the UN Security Council assured that the framework for a solution to the Cyprus problem would remain unchanged. He emphasized the positive reception of the new ideas by Guterres, despite the Turkish side's reluctance to engage. President Christodoulides stressed the importance of Guterres' commitment, saying the Secretary-General expressed his resolve to continue efforts for tangible progress. He also reiterated Cyprus' positive response to these efforts. Furthermore, Christodoulides discussed his meeting with the Permanent Representatives of the Security Council's five permanent members, who assured that the negotiating basis would not be lost even if there is a change in the UN Secretary-General. Addressing the diaspora, Christodoulides expressed gratitude for their ongoing support and efforts to maintain Cypriot identity in the United States. He condemned the ongoing occupation and division in Cyprus, asserting that reunification remains a key priority based on UN resolutions and EU principles. During the event, individuals such as John Josephakis, Stavros Kamilaris, and Despina Axiotakis were honored for their contributions. Christodoulides also highlighted Cyprus' Western orientation and the deepening strategic partnership with the United States, mentioning the desire to abolish visa requirements and enhance direct connectivity. President Christodoulides announced plans to return to the US later in the year to promot e Cyprus as a business and investment hub. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 due to Turkish occupation, with previous UN-led peace talks, including those in 2017, failing to produce a resolution. Guterres plans to convene another meeting, supported by consensus from all parties involved, while María Angela Holguín and Raffaele Fitto play key roles in the process.
