New York:Greek Cypriot negotiator, Menelaos Menelaou, emphasized the UN Secretary-General's commitment to resolving the Cyprus issue during discussions in New York with the Cypriot delegation led by President Nikos Christodoulides.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Menelaou noted that the UN Secretary-General is determined to make every effort until his term ends to resolve the Cyprus issue. The aim is to organize an expanded meeting to resume Cyprus talks, although a trilateral meeting in New York with the Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman did not occur.
Government sources indicated that President Christodoulides plans to convene a National Council meeting on Wednesday to brief the council and discuss recent developments. Menelaou mentioned that significant preparatory work has been done, but highlighted the Turkish side's delaying tactics as an obstacle to progress.
Menelaou asserted that the process should advance quickly, as the necessary conditions are in place and significant preparatory work has been completed. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the achievements from the 2017 Crans-Montana talks in the new negotiation process.
He also highlighted the comprehensive approach of the UN Secretary-General, which includes six points shared in 2017, essential for a complete solution to the Cyprus issue.
Despite efforts by the Greek Cypriot side and the United Nations, the trilateral meeting in New York did not occur, falling into a pattern of obstruction by the Turkish side. Cyprus has remained divided since 1974, with previous UN-led talks ending inconclusively. The UN Secretary-General plans to convene another meeting in a broader format after proper preparation, with involvement from Mara Angela Holgun and Raffaele Fitto as envoys.
