Nicosia:The United Nations Secretary-General's Personal Envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, is scheduled to arrive in Cyprus late Thursday night to engage in discussions with President Nikos Christodoulides on Friday.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Holguin is expected to meet President Christodoulides around 12 noon on Friday. She is also set to meet with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman on Monday at approximately 1130 a.m.
Holguin's visit comes as part of ongoing efforts to address the long-standing division of Cyprus, which has been split since 1974 following Turkey's invasion and occupation of the northern third of the island. Despite numerous UN-led peace talks, a resolution has remained elusive. Holguin is scheduled to hold a joint meeting with both leaders on November 9.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, nearing the end of his term, has announced plans to convene another broader meeting after adequate preparation, with the consensus of both parties and the guarantor powers. Maria Angela Holguin is tasked with engaging the parties, while Raffaele Fitto serves as the European Commission's Special Representative for Cyprus.
