Nicosia:Only 17.9% of secondary school students in Cyprus are enrolled in vocational education programmes, significantly lower than the EU average of 52.4%, stated President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides. This information was shared during his address at the opening ceremony of the 9th National Skills Competition, SkillsCyprus 2026, held at the State Fair in Nicosia. The address was delivered by Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Marinos Moushouttas on behalf of the President.
According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides emphasized the low participation rates in vocational education and training in Cyprus compared to other EU member states. The European Commission's country-specific recommendations recognize Cyprus' strong economic performance but also point out challenges in productivity, innovation, and skills that need addressing.
The President noted that the European Commission has called for measures to tackle labour shortages and enhance job quality by increasing the participation of vulnerable groups in the labour market. He stressed the importance of making vocational education and training more accessible and attractive, stating that skills competitions are integral to this effort by showcasing career development opportunities in technical and vocational fields.
In his address, President Christodoulides highlighted the establishment and expansion of the Technical Gymnasium as a significant milestone in Cyprus’ educational system. He also underscored the necessity of developing digital, green, and entrepreneurial skills to prepare young people for modern labour market demands. He remarked on the transformative impact of technology on technical professions, which, while not fully automatable, require modern technical skills.
The SkillsCyprus 2026 competition has expanded to include 18 skill categories, up from 12 in 2024. Deputy Director of the Cyprus Productivity Centre Nicos Philippou noted that the event features practical activities, professional presentations, scholarships, and prizes. He mentioned that around 25 volunteers are supporting the event, recalling Cyprus' achievement of a bronze medal in team entrepreneurship at EuroSkills 2025.
Running from October 29 to 31, SkillsCyprus 2026 is organized by the Cyprus Productivity Centre and aims to promote vocational education and encourage technical career paths. Participants have the opportunity to join a preparation programme to represent Cyprus at EuroSkills 2027 in Dusseldorf, Germany. The competition is open to the public and is supported by various media sponsors, including the Cyprus News Agency.
