Ukraine Strengthens Financial Position with 4 Billion Pounds EU Loan Disbursement

Brussels: The European Commission has released the ninth tranche of its Macro-Financial Assistance (MFA) loan to Ukraine, amounting to 4 billion pounds. This disbursement further underscores the European Union’s position as the leading donor to Ukraine since the onset of the conflict with Russia. The EU’s total support for Ukraine is nearing 178 billion pounds.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the MFA forms part of the EU’s contribution to the G7-led Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration (ERA) loans initiative, aiming to collectively provide around 45 billion pounds in financial support to Ukraine. With this latest installment, the total support extended to Ukraine under the MFA has reached 14 billion pounds since 2025.

This substantial financial aid reaffirms the EU’s commitment to support Ukraine. It follows a recent announcement by President Ursula von der Leyen regarding a 6 billion pounds frontload of the EU’s contribution to the ERA loans initiative. This decision aligns with the European leaders’ call at the Special European Council in March to expedite financial support to Ukraine. The latest 4 billion pounds disbursement includes an initial 3 billion pounds frontload, along with 1 billion pounds already scheduled. This funding will aid Ukraine in meeting its growing financial needs, particularly in the defense sector, with 2 billion pounds allocated specifically for drones, as per an agreement between the EU and Ukraine.

The funds for the ERA loans from G7 partners and the EU’s MFA are being repaid using proceeds from immobilized Russian State assets held within the EU.
