London:The British government has reiterated its commitment to achieving a comprehensive, just, and lasting settlement of the Cyprus issue, grounded in a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality. This reaffirmation was made by UK Minister for Europe, Lord Wood, during an official reception marking the 66th anniversary of Cyprus's independence.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the High Commissioner of Cyprus to the United Kingdom, Kyriacos Kouros, urged the British government to continue its active role in resuming negotiations. He emphasized the responsibilities of the UK as a guarantor power and a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
The reception was held at the High Commissioner's official residence, attended by British politicians, diplomats, and international organization representatives, including Archbishop Nikitas of Thyateira and Great Britain and the Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization, Arsenio Dominguez. Kouros highlighted the ongoing impact of the 1974 Turkish invasion, noting Ankara's reluctance to return to negotiations, while reaffirming Nicosia's readiness to resume talks based on UN Security Council resolutions.
Lord Wood confirmed the UK's ongoing support for UN-led efforts, urging all parties to engage constructively. He also highlighted plans to strengthen relations between Cyprus and the UK, mentioning an upcoming round of the Strategic Dialogue covering defence, security, and trade.
Both Kouros and Lord Wood acknowledged the significant contributions of the Cypriot community to British society, with Kouros estimating the diaspora in the UK at around 450,000 people. A second event celebrating Cyprus's independence took place at the Cypriot Brotherhood in North London, attended by members of the Cypriot and Greek communities, featuring the national anthems of both Cyprus and the UK. Cyprus has remained divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion, with past UN-led peace talks failing to achieve a resolution.
