Two sides’ negotiators continue their contacts in Nicosia, assess DiCarlo’s visit as very positive

Two sides’ negotiators on the Cyprus problem continue their contacts in Nicosia.

The Greek Cypriot negotiator, Menelaos Menelaou, and Turkish Cypriot leader’s Special Representative, Ergn Olgun, had a teleconference on Thursday, with the participation of the UNSG’s Special Representative in Cyprus, Colin Stewart, the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) has learned.

According to information, during their discussion the two negotiations reviewed the recent visit of the UN Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo to Cyprus and evaluated it as very positive. They also thanked the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for his steadfast commitment and will in helping efforts to revitalize the prospects for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem.

The two negotiators also reviewed the work of the bicommunal technical committees and discussed about promoting possible activities and initiatives through them.

CNA has learned that it was decided to hold an event, in the framework of the bicommunal technical committee on culture, with a view to promote networking and cooperation between artists from the two communities and encourage them to look into the potentials and prospects of organizing common activities.

Moreover, it was decided to organize, in the framework of the bicommunal committee on gender equality, a discussion in which women that took part in previous rounds of talks on the Cyprus problem will participate.

The next meeting of the negotiators is expected to take place on April 6.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
