Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leadership must respect the mission of United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) within its mandate, said the Left in the European Parliament through a post in its official account on X platform (formerly Twitter).

”We condemn the attack on UN peacekeepers by Turkish occupying forces in the buffer zone in Pyla”, the tweet reads, adding that ”violence and threats against UN personnel constitute a serious crime and responsibility lies with the occupying force and the occupation regime”.

It is further pointed out that ”the attempt by the occupation authorities to violate the status quo by occupying part of the buffer zone in Pyla is reprehensible and unacceptable”.

”Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leadership must respect the mission of United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus within its mandate,” the tweet concludes.

Members of the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) were attacked on Friday morning while blocking unauthorised construction works by the Turkish Cypriot puppet regime inside the buffer zone near Pyla.

The government of Cyprus, the UN and various countries have condemned the incident.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
