Three Elderly Patients Hospitalized for Severe Heatstroke Amid Cyprus Heatwave

Nicosia: Three elderly individuals are being treated for severe heatstroke at Nicosia General Hospital, as the particularly high temperatures and prolonged heatwave of recent days continue to affect the population, mainly affecting the vulnerable groups, State Health Services Organisation (OKYpY) spokesperson Charalambos Charilaou told CNA.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the patients include a 72-year-old man and two women aged 73 and 90, who were transported from their homes with severe symptoms of heatstroke.

The attending physicians have reported that the health condition of the patients is serious but stable, with signs of gradual improvement. Moreover, Charilaou stated that the Accident and Emergency Departments (A and E) of the island’s hospitals are seeing an “increased” number of patients with symptoms of heat exhaustion, dehydration, and sunburn.

Most of these cases involve elderly individuals, who, after receiving appropriate medical assistance, are discharged with instructions to ensure proper care at home. Charilaou emphasized the importance of public caution, advising individuals to avoid exposure to the sun and to stay adequately hydrated.

He further urged those exhibiting symptoms of heat-related illnesses to promptly contact their personal doctor for further guidance.
