THI Canada Expands Its Mandate to Support Cyprus’ CVAR

Nicosia: The Hellenic Initiative Canada has extended its support to Cyprus by providing a grant of $106,000 CDN to the Centre for Visual Arts and Research (CVAR) in Nicosia. This move marks a significant expansion of THI Canada’s outreach, aiming to bolster cultural and educational efforts in the region.

According to Cyprus News Agency, CVAR is part of the Costas and Rita Severis Foundation and serves as a pivotal institution for cultural and educational enrichment in Cyprus. It plays a crucial role in promoting the island’s history and cultural heritage while fostering peaceful coexistence and understanding among its communities. The support from THI Canada will enhance CVAR’s flagship education program, C.R.E.A.T.E.S, which impacts over 4,000 students annually with its 15 specialised programmes accredited by the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth.

Dr. Rita Severis highlighted the significance of her visit to Toronto, where she engaged with the Hellenic Cypriot Canadian community, observing their strong commitment to preserving shared heritage. She expressed optimism about further collaborations, made possible through initiatives like the C.R.E.A.T.E.S. educational programs supported by THI Canada.

Beyond education, CVAR engages the public through city tours, lectures, exhibitions, cultural walks, and dialogues, earning accolades like the Europa Nostra Award and the European Union Cultural Heritage Grand Prix. George Mavroudis, a major donor, emphasized the importance of preserving Cyprus’ history for future learning and growth. Tony Lourakis, another donor, praised CVAR’s role in promoting culture and unity, underscoring the necessity of supporting the institution to ensure its sustainability and broader reach.
