The international community must not show selective tolerance in matters of principle, nor apply the logic of double standards, President of the House of Representatives Annita Demetriou has said referring to the role that Turkey seeks to play in the current crisis and the non-implementation by Ankara of the sanctions imposed collectively against Russia.
Demetriou was speaking at a meeting she held on Wednesday with Presidents and delegations of AHEPA (American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association), AHI (American Hellenic Institute), Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations (CoP) and ?’nai B’rith International (???) who are visiting Cyprus in the framework of the 5th Hellenic-Jewish Mission in Cyprus, Greece and Israel. The delegation consists of Jimmy Kokotas (AHEPA), Nick Larigakis (???), Daniel S. Mariaschin (BBI) and Dianne Lob (COP). Present at the meeting was Presidential Commissioner Photis Photiou.
Referring to her recent visit at the Polish-Ukrainian borders, on the sidelines of the Meeting of Women Speakers of EU Parliaments, she said that Cyprus, which is still occupied by Turkish troops since 1974, remains committed to the respect of the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of all states.
The House President also spoke about the role that Turkey seeks to play in the recent crisis and Ankara’s noncompliance with the sanctions collectively imposed on Russia, stressing that there can be no double standards nor a selective tolerance by the international community on matters of principle.
The House President said that Cyprus attaches great importance to the tripartite cooperation with Greece and Israel at all levels, noting the added value of the Parliaments in this cooperation, in terms of strengthening and expanding the goals set at the level of governments, including the prospect of a US participation in the Greece-Cyprus-Israel tripartite parliamentary mechanism.
Demetriou also noted the existing opportunities for further strengthening the relations and cooperation between the House of Representatives and the US Congress. Concluding, she said that the Cyprus Parliament is ready to undertake common initiatives and actions with the participation of diaspora organisations and in cooperation with the Presidential Commissioner.
