Stewart Briefs UNFICYP Troop Contributing Countries and UNSC Ahead of Mandate’s Renewal

Athens: UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative and head of the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), Colin Stewart, will brief the UNFICYP Troop Contributing Countries on Tuesday, in New York: Colin Stewart, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative and head of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), is set to brief the troop-contributing countries in New York. This briefing is a precursor to discussions regarding the mandate of the peacekeeping force.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Stewart is also scheduled to address the United Nations Security Council on January 16 during closed consultations. This briefing comes ahead of the anticipated adoption of a resolution for the renewal of the UNFICYP mandate, which is scheduled for January 31.

Cyprus has remained divided since 1974, following Turkey’s invasion and occupation of the northern third of the island. Despite numerous rounds of UN-led peace talks, a resolution has not yet been achieved. The most recent negotiations, held in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana, ended without a conclusive agreement.
