Nicosia: The number of state employees in Cyprus increased by 419, or 0.8%, in August 2026 compared with the same month last year, reaching 53,080, according to the Cyprus Statistical Service (CyStat).
According to Cyprus News Agency, during the January-August 2026 period, the average number of state employees increased by 0.4% compared with the corresponding period of 2025.
In August, employment in the Civil Service declined by 1.0% year-on-year, while employment in both the Educational Service and the Security Forces increased by 2.2%, CyStat said.
The largest increase was recorded among employees with contracts of indefinite duration, up 3.0% compared with August 2025, while hourly paid workers recorded a slight decrease of 0.1%.
By service and employee category, the largest percentage increase was recorded among employees with contracts of indefinite duration in the Educational Service, at 26.0%, while the largest decrease was recorded among employees with contracts of definite duration in the Security Forces, at 96.6%.
CyStat said the sharp decline in employees with contracts of definite duration in the Security Forces was mainly due to the completion and non-renewal of specific contracts of definite duration from August 2025 onwards.
