S&P, Nasdaq fall over 1.1% each as US stocks close lower

The S and P and the Nasdaq fell more than 1.1% apiece as US stocks closed Tuesday with losses.

The S and P 500 plummeted 51 points, or 1.16%, to finish the day at 4,437. The tech-heavy Nasdaq dove 157 points, or 1.14%, to 13,631.

The blue-chip Dow decreased 361 points, or 1.02%, to close the session at 34,946.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, jumped 10.9% to 19.43, while the 10-year US Treasury yield added 0.9% to 4.223%.

The dollar index lost 0.1% to 103.22, while the euro rose 0.1% to $1.0915 against the greenback.

Precious metals were in negative territory, with gold losing 0.2% at $1,903 per ounce and silver trimming 0.3% to $22.54.

Crude oil prices were down around 1.6%, with global benchmark Brent crude at $84.94 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude at $81.03.
