Seven new entries were added in 2022 to the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Cyprus National Commission for UNESCO and the Department of Modern and Contemporary Culture of the Deputy Ministry of Culture announced.
According to a press release, the list was enriched in accordance with a decision of the Special Committee for Intangible Cultural Heritage, which examined the applications submitted in 2022 by various stakeholders.
Specifically, the new entries include the traditional use of the aromatic and medicinal plants of the Troodos mountain region, cultivation and traditions regarding the almond tree, as well as the customs from Christmas Day to Epiphany.
Also included in the list were weaving and silk weaving, the folk song / poem of Arodaphnousa, tongue twisters and traditional baking products.
“The purpose of the creation of the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage is to record and preserve the traditional cultural expressions that are still a part of the lives of Cypriots, through a democratic process involving state agencies, local government, cultural organisations and other stakeholders”, the press release concludes.
