Security and education are key priorities for the Government, President of the Cyprus Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, said on Friday inaugurating the new police station in Pissouri village at Limassol, and later the new facilities of the International School of Paphos.
Speaking at the event in Pissouri, in the presence of Justice Minister and Public Order, Marios Hartsiotis and the Police Chief, Stylianos Papatheodorou, President Christodoulides said that the presence of the police force in a tourist resort such as Pissouri is necessary.
Among others, the President stressed that ensuring public order and strengthening a sense of security for citizens is one of the basic obligations of the state. He added that “this is the cornerstone of a modern state, a state with rule of law, which has the obligation to defend and preserve in practice the human rights of citizens and democratic institutions in general.”
The President stated that the total cost of upgrading the building, which once housed the community’s
primary school, exceeded 370 thousand euros.
Addressing the 11 Police staff at the station, he said that “the facilities ensure the appropriate working conditions for the performance of your multi-dimensional and demanding work.”
He also assured that the Government is on the side of the members of the Police “to upgrade and modernise the means at their disposal so that they can carry out their work.”
Furthermore, speaking later at the inauguration of the new facilities of the International School of Paphos, President Christodoulides said that education is a priority for the Government as it determines the character of young people and is decisive in order to strengthen and improve society.
The Government and I personally, President Christodoulides went on, “we support and will continue to support such initiatives that contribute to the efforts to upgrade education and learning in our country.”
The President said that plans are being promoted to ensure that through the education system, the values, knowle
dge and skills that should distinguish democratic, critical thinking and active citizens are established.
This is why as a state we have already proceeded, he continued, in the implementation of innovative solutions and reforms, with the sole aim of effectively and qualitatively upgrading the education provided.
“Through education, we create tomorrow’s active global citizens, who will lead the progress and prosperity of our country, at European and international level, but also of society in general,” the President of the Republic noted.
