Nicosia: The importance of the Cyprus Trade Union Forum in building trust and cooperation between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, and in developing a common vision for Cyprus, was highlighted during a discussion at the extraordinary meeting of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) Workers' Group. The meeting took place on Wednesday afternoon as part of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union in Nicosia.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Andreas Matsas, Secretary General of SEK, emphasized that the discussion aimed to present Cyprus's reality from the perspective of society and trade unions, showcasing their active contribution to resolving the Cyprus problem. Matsas noted that the division of the island continues to impact citizens' daily lives and remains challenging for other European citizens to comprehend.
Matsas highlighted the trade unions' role in overcoming stereotypes and divisions that have long characterized the two communities. He stated that their continuous cooperation addresses issues concerning workers and supports the prospect of the country's reunification. "We have succeeded in overcoming our fears, ideological, and other differences to build a perspective beneficial for all Cypriots," Matsas remarked. He added that joint studies and declarations by the unions aim to create a unified framework for labor relations and social protection in a reunited Cyprus.
Since its inception, the Forum has sought to establish a widely accepted cooperation structure, intending to convey to political leaders that society can progress through dialogue and shared human values. Matsas concluded by emphasizing the importance of trade unionists and society in transcending political barriers to promote basic human principles and values.
Sotiroula Charalambous, Secretary General of the Pancyprian Federation of Labour (PEO), discussed the trade union movement's priorities during the EESC session, noting that these priorities are overshadowed by the ongoing division of Cyprus. She described the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot trade union organizations as pioneers in their efforts to unite workers from both communities and create a common vision for Cyprus's future.
Charalambous reiterated the commitment of trade unions on both sides to a bicommunal federal solution, as outlined by the United Nations and high-level agreements between the two leaders. She stressed the importance of resuming talks, expressing concern that the division continues as long as the situation remains unchanged.
The presentation "Labour Market Guide: why shared knowledge matters" by Maria Zeniou and Erbay Akansoy from the Cyprus Dialogue Forum Secretariat emphasized the role of shared knowledge and reliable information in fostering dialogue and cooperation in divided societies. The lack of shared knowledge hinders dialogue, as data collected and interpreted separately by different communities leads to conflicting perceptions of reality. Consequently, information often becomes a tool for division, reducing trust in data and entrenching stakeholder positions.
The presentation underlined the Cyprus Dialogue Forum's role as a permanent, inclusive dialogue process, along with the Labour Market Task Group's efforts to formulate a single and fair labor market framework. It concluded that developing common knowledge fosters a shared perception of reality and a collective responsibility for labor market challenges.
Matsas commented on the detrimental effects of limited knowledge or its manipulation, stressing the importance of genuine communication.
