The Republic of Cyprus remains committed to the One China Policy, and supports peace and security in the Taiwan Strait, Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Theodoros Gotsis, told CNA.
Replying to a question by CNA, he said that “in relation to the voting held in Taiwan on January 12, we wish to reiterate that the Republic of Cyprus remains committed to the One China Policy, and supports peace and security in the Taiwan Strait”.
It is recalled that on January 12th a voting took place in Taiwan but based on the One China principle, there is only one China in the world, Taiwan is a part of China, and the Government of the People’s Republic of China is the only legitimate Government representing the whole country. Beijing says that ‘Taiwan’s independence’ is a separatist action, that complete reunification will be eventually achieved and both sides of the Taiwan Strait will get reunified. Reunification is “inevitable”, Beijing said after the voting.
The European Union said in a statement that it “co
ngratulates all the voters who participated in this democratic exercise”, adding that “the EU remains concerned about growing tensions in the Taiwan Strait and opposes any unilateral attempt to change the status quo”.
“The European Union underlines that peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait are key to regional and global security and prosperity”, said the statement by the Spokesperson of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell.
US President Joe Biden said that the United States does not support the independence of Taiwan, while the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Moscow continues to view Taiwan as an integral part of China.
