Reunification of Cyprus Can Be a Beacon of Hope, President Says.

Nicosia: An independent and reunified Cyprus holds significant importance for the region, Europe, and the world, according to President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides. Speaking at the 20th annual conference organized by the Economist magazine in Nicosia, President Christodoulides emphasized that the reunification of Cyprus could serve as a beacon of hope for the region.

According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides highlighted Cyprus’s role as a stable and reliable partner within an unstable region. Elaborating on the Cyprus-US strategic dialogue, he revealed that preparations for a road map with specific deliverables are underway, with further announcements expected soon.

Addressing the geopolitical challenges in the Eastern Mediterranean and the wider Middle East and Europe, President Christodoulides voiced his belief in the opportunity to establish a new narrative of peace, cooperation, and security. He emphasized the need for the EU to make bold decisions for strategic autonomy, not
ing Cyprus’s support for a more federal EU.

The President underscored Cyprus’s role as an anchor of stability in a turbulent region. He criticized the oversimplified view of the region as perpetually unstable, instead highlighting opportunities for stabilization and strategic action amidst ongoing turmoil. He cited the region’s unique possibilities for security and cooperation, which could benefit from regional collaboration.

He reiterated the significance of Cyprus’s geographic position and its transformation into a strategic advantage through continuous efforts. Cyprus’s strong relations with Middle East neighbors and its EU membership enhance its status as a stable, reliable partner, making it a key player in addressing regional challenges.

Highlighting recent initiatives, President Christodoulides mentioned Cyprus’s humanitarian aid efforts, including the establishment of the “Amalthea” sea corridor for Gaza. He emphasized Cyprus’s role as a regional hub for crisis evacuation and its readiness to assis
t nationals from over 30 countries.

The President pointed to the first strategic dialogue between the US and Cyprus as a testament to their upgraded relationship and commitment to regional security. He announced the ongoing preparation of a road map with the US, anticipating positive developments soon.

President Christodoulides stressed the EU’s critical role in the Eastern Mediterranean, advocating for active involvement and cooperation with regional partners. He positioned Cyprus as a bridge between the EU and the Middle East, emphasizing the region’s impact on key issues such as security, migration, and energy.

As Cyprus prepares for its EU Council Presidency in 2026, the President aims to strengthen EU relations with Middle Eastern and Gulf countries. He outlined plans for a regional meeting in Cyprus, working with EU institutions on specific initiatives.

Reflecting on global conflicts, President Christodoulides emphasized the urgency of resuming Cyprus reunification talks, interrupted since 2017. He
highlighted recent informal UN-led discussions in New York as a positive step toward resolving the Cyprus issue.
