Nicosia: The Republic of Cyprus has co-signed a British initiative on a joint statement regarding the situation in Gaza, alongside approximately 20 European Union member states and other countries. This move signifies Cyprus’s support for a declaration emphasizing broad institutional validity and support, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in a statement on Tuesday.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the Foreign Ministry highlighted the dire escalation of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza as a pressing reason for the international community to enhance its political and diplomatic messages to all involved parties. The joint statement is seen as a component of this collective effort. The Ministry noted that the timing of Cyprus’s endorsement aligns with the formation of a significant majority of states backing the statement’s content, thus enhancing its institutional weight and potential impact.
The Ministry emphasized Cyprus’s careful evaluation of its interventions to ensure they are meaningful, effective, and supported by an extensive international coalition. The decision to back this joint statement reflects the deteriorating situation on the ground in Gaza, the necessity to bolster the international community’s collective influence, and the pursuit of coordinated action. The Ministry also pointed out the “overwhelming majority” of states that have signed the statement.
In aligning with Poland and Denmark, the other two states of the EU Trio Presidency, Cyprus affirmed its commitment to good cooperation and cohesion in the lead-up to the upcoming Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU. The Ministry reiterated that this stance is consistent with Cyprus’s position on increasing humanitarian aid to civilians, while respecting Israel’s international obligations and maintaining dialogue with Israel as a friendly nation.
Furthermore, the Ministry stated that the joint statement reinforces Cyprus’s message to all parties and aligns with its initiatives to deliver humanitarian aid via the sea corridor. With a commitment to institutional responsibility and sincere dialogue with Israel, Cyprus asserts its position while upholding the principles of International Law and addressing the humanitarian aspects of the crisis.
