Nicosia: Refugees’ problems will be solved only through a Cyprus problem solution, President Nikos Christodoulides stated on Wednesday during an event titled ‘Dialogue for Democracy’. The event, co-organized by the Office of the Citizens’ Commissioner and the CARDET research center, was held at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia.
According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides addressed concerns about Turkish land developers approaching refugees to sell their land in the Turkish-occupied territories. When questioned if those who sell their property out of financial need should be considered “traitors,” he emphasized that property rights are individual choices, and the state will not intervene in such decisions.
The President highlighted recent governmental measures addressing the usurpation of properties in the occupied areas, marking significant steps taken during his administration. He acknowledged efforts towards refugee housing but stressed that a resolution to the Cyprus problem is essential
to address the abnormal situation experienced by refugees.
During his opening remarks, President Christodoulides expressed the importance of events like ‘Dialogue for Democracy’ in tackling the credibility crisis facing institutions. He emphasized that Cyprus belongs to its citizens, underscoring a commitment to democratic participation and active citizenship as a political priority.
Throughout the event, the President engaged with attendees on various issues, including concerns of senior citizens, students, road safety, rising prices, housing, and employment. Cyprus remains divided since 1974 following Turkey’s invasion and occupation of its northern third, with numerous UN-led peace talks failing to achieve lasting results. The most recent negotiations in July 2017 at Crans-Montana, Switzerland, ended without resolution.
