With a total haul of 14 medals and the 13th place in the medal table out of 26 countries, the Cyprus Olympic Committee’s delegation bids farewell to Oran, Algeria, where it took part in the 18th Mediterranean Games.
In detail, the medals won by the athletes of the Cyprus Olympic Committee delegation are as follows:
Gold (5): Marios Georgiou (Gymnastics / Horizontal Bar), Kalia Antoniou (Swimming / 100m Freestyle), Stefanos Nikolaidis (Shooting / Skeet), Milan Trajkovic (110m Hurdles / Track and Field), Apostolos Parellis (Discus / Track and Field).
Silver (2): Alexandros Poursanidis (Hammer throw / Track and Field), Olivia Fotopoulou (200m./ Track and Field)
Bronze (7): Marios Georgiou (Gymnastics / All around), Kalia Antoniou (Swimming / 50m Freestyle), Markos Tsangaras (Karate / 67Kg), Elena Christodoulou / Eva Kattirtzi (Badminton / Women’s Double), Charalambos Choiros (Wrestling / Freestyle / 86Kg), Olivia Fotopoulou (Track and Field /100m.).
According to the COC, another record set by the delegation in Oran was the number of different sports, of which athletes managed to get on the podium.
The sports that produced the 14 medals are: Track and Field (2 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze), Gymnastics (1 gold, 1 bronze), Swimming (1 gold, 1 bronze), Shooting (1 gold), Karate (1 bronze), Badminton (1 bronze), Wrestling (1 bronze).
It is also noted that three athletes won more than one medal at the Games in Oran.
Kalia Antoniou became the first swimmer to win a gold medal at the Mediterranean Games since 2009 and the only one in the sport to return from a Mediterranean Games event with more than one medal (1 gold and 1 bronze).
Marios Georgiou won more than one medal for the second consecutive time despite very high competition.
Olivia Fotopoulou is the only athlete of the delegation who stood on the podium three times. The sprinter won the silver medal in the 200m. with a very strong performance in the qualification stage and a similar one in the final, while she was third both in the 100m. and as a member of the 4x100m. relay team.
